☀️ Heatwave and Infants: Dangers, Advice and Useful Brands to Protect Baby

Every summer, hot weather is a real danger for toddlers. Infants, in particular, are highly vulnerable, as their bodies are not yet able to regulate temperature properly. As a parent, it's crucial to know what to do to avoid tragedy.

In this article, you will find :

- The dangers of heat for babies

- Simple steps to protect them

- What the health authorities say

- Useful brands offering products designed to face summer with peace of mind

- Key information to prevent heatstroke, to share without moderation

⚠️ A tragic reality: every summer, babies die from the heat

Every year, several infants die after being left in a car in direct sunlight. A few minutes' forgetfulness can be enough: the temperature inside a vehicle can reach over 50°C, even with the windows ajar.

Never, ever leave a baby alone in a car, even for "two minutes".

Even in the shade. Even with the engine running.

Why are babies more exposed to heat-related risks?

An infant's thermoregulatory system is immature: he sweats little, cannot express his thirst, and his body rapidly becomes dehydrated.

The main risks :

- Dehydration

- Hyperthermia (heat stroke)

- Insulation

What are the signs of dehydration or heatstroke in babies?

Keep an eye on :

- High body temperature (> 38°C)

- Hot, dry, red or clammy skin

- Reduced urination (dry diapers for more than 6 hours)

- Unusual behaviour: drowsiness, weak crying, agitation

- Vomiting or rapid breathing

➡️ If these signs appear: refresh baby immediately and consult a doctor or call 15.

Can you give water to an infant?

Before 6 months: NO, unless medically indicated. Breast or infant milk is sufficient to cover all an infant's water needs. Giving water to a baby under 6 months of age can :

- Disturbing electrolyte balance

- Reduce your nutritional intake

- Tired kidneys

After 6 months: you can offer a little low-mineralized water, in addition to milk.

Essential steps to protect baby from the heat

1. Moisturize according to age

- More frequent breastfeeding

- Bottles more often, without forcing

- Water only after 6 months

2. Adapt clothing

- Light, loose-fitting cotton clothing

- At home, layer only if temperature exceeds 27°C

3. Keep a cool interior

- Close shutters and curtains during the day

- Ventilate early in the morning and at night

- Avoid blasting the air-conditioning or directing the fan at baby

4. Refresh baby regularly

- Warm bath (not cold)

- Gentle misting

- Wet diaper on legs or neck

5. Avoid going out between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

- Always in the shade

- Wide-brimmed hat, UV goggles if baby tolerates them

Useful brands for coping with the heat with baby

Babymoov

- Ultra-safe bladeless fan

- Anti-UV tent with integrated mosquito net

- Fresy cooling cushion for stroller or car seat

Tip: place a bottle of ice-cold water in the tent to cool the air naturally (out of baby's reach, of course).

Beaba

- Portable hand-held atomizer

- 100% silicone water bottles (from 6 months)

☀️ Stokke

- Stroller sunshade with UV protection

- Breathable mesh fabric to prevent overheating

Aden + Anaïs / Lässig

- Organic cotton muslin diapers: absorbent, lightweight, multi-purpose (parasol, blanket, summer sheet...).

Aerosleep

- Breathable mattress designed to limit heat and promote better air circulation under baby's body

In case of discomfort or doubt

1. Place baby in the shade in a cool place

2. Undress him, gently dab his skin with a damp cloth

3. Give him something to drink (milk or water, depending on his age)

4. Monitor its temperature

5. Call 15 if you notice any worrying signs
